What motivated you to teach?
I come from a long line of educators and in my early thirties I started thinking about teaching and when I had the opportunity to become an adjunct professor at Mercer I jumped at it and haven't looked back since.
What are one or two of your favorite education quotes?
It took a while of being in the classroom before I realized that what was occurring was learning not teaching. I liked that quote partly because it was originally said by Sting. He was a primary teacher before he became a famous musician.
What techniques do you use to engage students?
I use things like the minute paper and the think share pair where students interact with each other. I've also found that if I present topcs that are text light but very image rich and use movies and animations that works well. Finally, I always try to tie in current events and try to discuss concepts that the students will be able to utilize in their own lives.
How do you find time to teach, stay current, engage in professional development and have a family.
You may wonder how I and many of my colleagues find time to teach, stay current, engage in professional development and have a family. The answer is that it is not possible... but I try.
