What do you do at Mercer Outside the classroom?
Beyond helping students through advisement, I was the chairperson for the academic integrity committee and I am the coordinator of the History program. As the TV announcer for the Mercer Basketball team I’m able to do some “fun stuff” for the school. I always wanted to be an announcer and I’m very happy that Mercer has given me the opportunity.

How did you get involved in history?
I’ve always loved history even as a little child. I was the strange nerdy kid who would just sit and read encyclopedias. I’ve always had this interest in the facts and names and dates of history. I used to give my family quizzes during long car rides. I always knew history was the calling for me.

I love the first few days of class because students don’t know what they are getting themselves into.

Goals for the future
I want to keep improving on my teaching. I’m my biggest critic and I’d like to find ways to be more effective and somehow someday find the magic to get all students to read. And I’d love to continue to do some research and writing.

How did you get involved in your research area?
I’ve always been a passionate sports fan. I grew up in Green Bay Wisconsin. There’s no such thing as NOT being a Packers fan if you’re from Green Bay. When I went to graduate school I talked to my professor and said I’d love to do something on the Packers and why the Packers have a team…and he said Yes! And that led not only to a passion for sports but also to an academic study of sports.
