How long have you been teaching at Mercer?
I've been teaching at Mercer for 14 years full time. Both as full time professor of music and the coordinator of the music program. But I also had three years as an adjunct, which prepared me for the full time position. So 17 years in total.
What makes is worthwhile to come to work everyday?
The students make it worthwhile for me to get out of bed everyday. I know that's the stock answer...but it's just true. The energy of the students keeps me alive. It keeps me young. Plus the fact that I'm a lifelong learner, I just love the interaction with the students. I love these kids...that's all I can say.
What do you want your students to take away from your teaching?
So many things, it's difficult to enumerate. Primarily an enriched sense of being. I want them to have an elevated awareness of things...not just music but all things. I want them to love learning for its own sake.
How do you maintain your balance between your teaching and your art?
It is a tricky balancing act, and the balance invariably tips in the favor of teaching...it's just the way it is, but that's okay. Because teaching is an art. For me teaching is one of the most creative endeavors one can engage in..
