What are some of the challenges with clinical sites?
One of the major challenges is that we are competing with a number of schools for a limited number of clinical spaces. We have to be creative in creating alternative placements for our students, such as nursing home and mental health facilities.

What are some of the gaps in health care that MCCC can address?
There is a growing need for direct healthcare providers in the field, such as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) and home health aides. We are starting new programs for these categories of healthcare providers this fall. I hope we will also be able to move a satellite version of the program at the James Kerney campus.

What are some of the trends in the nursing profession?
We have an aging population. Baby boomers are starting to reach their 60's. They are beginning to need more nursing care. We as a profession will need to address their needs, which will stress the system we have currently. There is already an increasing need for education, which is reflected in our enrollment. We have a very large pipeline of students (approximately 1200). We take about 60 students in to the program each year. Many of our students choose nursing as a second career choice, including more men entering the field.
