Tell us a little bit how you got into teaching.
I started as a college major in English and since my parents were paying the bill they insisted I get my teachers certificate. When I started my student teaching, I loved it and I was hooked.  I just love teaching. I love my students. They are enthusiastic, committed, and bright and I love the subject matter. It's been a lot of fun.

What makes Mercer students so special?
Mercer students are a diverse group that spans the spectrum of ages and different ethnic diversity. This semester I have several students from India and Pakistan. I have older students, and of course traditional young students. I have some students who want to become college professors, and others who want to teach pre-school. Mercer students are very open about what they've experienced and what they want to do. It's a nice cohesive group that I enjoy working with.

Any more educational advice to new faculty members?
There are several wonderful support groups on campus including Master Faculty, Writing Across Disciplines and the Mercer Curriculum project. All of these groups are focused on learning how to become a better teacher. It is also important to explain what you are about to teach. Find out what your students already know and tell me them how much fun this is going to be to learn. Explain as clearly as possible and give them an opportunity to practice together. Students support each other and they can learn from each other.
