Accessibility is the practice of making your websites usable by as many people as possible.
ALLY an integrated accessibility tool that helps instructors improve course content and provides students with alternative formats for materials.
How does Ally work?
As content is uploaded into Blackboard by faculty, an indicator is displayed, providing an at-a-glance view of the level of accessibility of the file. Clicking an indicator provides additional information about how to improve the file with "green being the goal". Ally also automatically creates alternative formats for students.
USING ALLY
To check Blackboard content accessibility, use the built-in Ally Accessibility Report found under 'Details & Actions' (or 'Course Tools') for an overall score and itemized issues, or look for inline Accessibility Indicators (colored icons) next to individual files and content for quick fixes like adding alt text or fixing contrast, with red/orange indicating issues and green meaning accessible. The report provides detailed guidance on why issues matter (missing titles, captions, contrast) and how to fix them directly within the editor, improving scores as you go.
- Access the Course Accessibility Report:
- In your Ultra course, go to the Details & Actions panel (or Course Tools in some views).
- Select Books & Tools, then Accessibility Report(or View course & institution tools > Accessibility Report).
- Review the Report:
-
- The Overview shows your course score and content grouped by type.
- The Content tab lists all items with issues, prioritized by severity.
- Check Individual Content Items:
- Look for colored accessibility indicators (score icons)next to files, documents, and in the content editor.
- Click the indicator to open the Instructor Feedback panel, which explains the issue (e.g., "missing alt text," "low contrast") and offers quick fixes(like suggested colors or adding descriptions).
